Motor coils, regardless of their simple design, are complex components that have been specially engineered to fit into a motor to direct electrical energy. The center of a motor coil is its stator and rotor. These two elements work together to keep a constant flow of electrical power.

What is a Motor Coil?

The purpose of an electric motor is to change electrical energy into mechanical, or work energy, through the use of torque. Electrical current flows through wire windings that are wrapped around a stator. The wire windings of the stator create an electromagnetic field to turn the rotor as current passes through the stator. The torque that is produced is determined by the force of the current, density of the wire, and the windings of the coil.

The simplest, to the most complex, motors have a stator and rotor as a part of the motor coil. They are the essence of what drives an electric motor.

A unique feature of direct current (DC) motors is the commutator, which is a cylinder with several metal contacts on the rotor. They reverse the flow of current in each half turn of the rotor to keep the rotation steady and can serve as a mechanical rectifier. Though they were once a necessary part of electric motors, they are less frequently used in modern electric motors.

Motor Coil Materials

The foundation of any electrical coil is its wiring. The most common form of wiring, regardless of the type of coil, is copper since it has high ductility, excellent conductivity, and can be configured for any application. For a motor coil, copper wire is coated with enamel or lacquer to reduce the amount of heat that is created since heat can seriously damage the performance of the coil.

A critical factor for a motor coil is how it is wound. For the best performance, coils are wound such that each layer fits easily into the layer below. Though wild winding can be used, such a method reduces the fill factor of the winding and leads to an inefficient coil.

Important Factors for Motor Coil Production

When producing a coil, it is important to determine the gauge of wire that is to be used. Larger gauge wires can produce a high amount of energy but are difficult to configure and limit the number of windings. Lower gauge wires may not be as productive but can have more windings.

The best wire windings have a high fill factor and limit the amount of dead space. When producing a winding, it is difficult to avoid empty or dead space. The more carefully the wire is wound and placed, the higher will be the fill factor.
